Whole, broken and powder Tremella grades serve different commercial routes. Buyers need a written comparison that connects visual appearance and particle form with intended processing, packing, acceptance points and repeat-order controls.

The comparison should be built around the buyer’s production route. An intact retail-facing grade, a broken processing grade and a powder ingredient can all be commercially valid, but their acceptance criteria, packing protection and cost structure are not interchangeable.

Define the grade before comparing price

A whole grade may prioritize intact frilly fruiting bodies, a consistent golden colour range and limited breakage. A broken grade accepts smaller pieces for processing or repacking, while powder requires a declared raw-material basis and particle-size expectation.

Use the same grade name on the quotation, sample label, specification, batch record and outer carton. A commercial name without written acceptance points is not a repeatable grade.

Match appearance controls to the route

Whole and broken Tremella can be compared for colour, frond size, intactness, breakage, fines, visible foreign material and substrate carryover. Powder loses the original morphology, so identity, mesh, moisture protection and packaging integrity become more important.

The buyer’s process decides which differences matter. Retail presentation, tea blending, milling, extraction and capsule production do not require the same visual grade.

Use reference samples with written tolerances

Keep an approved sample for colour, size and breakage, then connect it to measurable or inspectable limits in the specification. A photograph supports communication but cannot replace a retained physical reference and batch-specific release record.

Receiving teams should know which variations are acceptable and which require review. This prevents normal agricultural variation from being confused with a grade failure.

Connect grade to packing and logistics

Whole fruiting bodies require crush protection and careful carton fill. Broken material and powder need strong moisture barriers, sealed inner packaging and clear lot identification. Packing decisions can preserve or destroy the grade approved at sampling.

Confirm pack size, carton configuration, storage conditions and receiving checks before dispatch so the agreed grade survives the entire route.

Run a controlled sample comparison

Evaluate candidate grades under the same lighting, sample weight and inspection method. Record colour range, intactness, average size, breakage, fines, visible foreign material, aroma and pack condition instead of relying on a general impression.

For powder, include particle-size expectation, flow, colour and packaging integrity. Keep the sample lot number and evaluation date so the result can be linked to the final quotation and purchase order.

Compare the supporting records

The grade name on a pouch should match the name used in the specification, batch record, invoice and carton label. If the supplier uses internal grade codes, ask for a written explanation and ensure the approved code remains visible through dispatch.

Current batch evidence is more useful than a generic historical certificate. Confirm which records will accompany the actual commercial lot and who will review them before shipment.

Model the real cost of each grade

A whole grade may carry a higher purchase price but reduce sorting and improve presentation. A broken grade may be efficient for milling or blending. Powder can reduce processing steps but adds questions about raw-material basis, particle size and moisture protection.

Compare usable yield, labour, waste, repacking and quality-control effort alongside price per kilogram. The most economical grade is the one that fits the buyer’s route with the fewest hidden operations.
